Team Manipal Racing (TMR) is Manipal University's official off-road racing team for SAE BAJA International. The idea is to conceptualize, design and manufacture an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) to compete at events organized by SAE International. The collegiate design series is a platform for students to apply their classroom skills in tackling real-world situations, managing finances and optimizing resources. Since its inception in 2008, TMR has so far represented the nation in three editions against its international counter parts in the United States and has been named the "Best Asian Team" in every event.
The vehicle is a chromalloy space frame, and its heart is a 305cc single cylinder with air-cooled Briggs and Stratton sponsored engine, revolving at 4000 rpm. SAE 5W-30 Mobil oil maintains the desired lubrication and assists in heat dissipation inside the engine. The continuously varying transmission (CV T), which is self-tuned and gearless, is coupled to the engine and enhances every HP of the available 14. Tuning is defined as transmitting appropriate bits of torque and power to the rear driveline at an instant throttle response. The final drive is comprised of a standard 4T gear-oil-lubricated Polaris F-N-R gearbox driving a Torsen type limited slip differential (LSD) via a chain-sprocket drive.
For its exceptional mechanical / thermal stability, very high load-carrying capacity and resistance to corrosion, marine grease is applied to the wheel hubs, drive shafts and the different sprockets at the final drive. The majority of the chains fail from inside, and thus Motul chain lube adheres to chain at even high speeds by maintaining the desired load-carrying capacity under different temperatures and moistures. Sufficient low viscosity reaches to the internal surface and sustains the lubricating film under applied load.
The team manufactures a car each year from scratch and is continuing to improve both in terms of technology and strategic approach. IIf the team is to continue to meet its standards and excel amidst the current global conditions, assistance from the corporate sector and other institutions will be needed. TMR looks forward to various advances in manufacturing techniques to improve accuracy and welcomes all industries to invest and reap the benefits of international recognition. in ninth place in endurance and earned the second "Most Safest Vehicle Award" at SAE BAJA India 2013 in Indore.
TMR thanks all its sponsors and well-wishers for making the 2012 season a success. The team looks forward to your support and faith for the upcoming 2013 season.
